What We Loved

  • AirPlay compatibilityBuilt-in Wi-Fi means you can stream music directly from Spotify, control it with Google Assistant or Alexa, and use Apple AirPlay 2 from your iPhone.
  • Chromecast compatibilityThe Chromecast integration means any audio playing on your phone can be instantly cast to the soundbar.
  • Dialogue clarity (for TV/soundbar use)The LG's dedicated center channel makes an enormous difference for dialogue clarity. This means actors' voices stay locked to the screen even when you're sitting off to the side—something the Yamaha simply can't match due to its stereo-only configuration.
  • EQ customizationyou run the AI Room Calibration.then adjusts the sound accordingly.the calibration took about five minutes of test tones while I stayed quiet in the room. The difference before and after was remarkable—the bass became tighter, dialogue clearer, and the surround effects more convincing.
  • HDMI 2.1 gamingincluding support for 120Hz gamingThe LG's support for HDMI 2.1 features like Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) makes it future-proof for next-generation gaming.
  • HDMI ARC)including support for 120Hz gaming and improved eARC (enhanced Audio Return Channel) implementation.
  • Loudness / maximum volumeThe LG, meanwhile, can handle rooms twice that size without breaking a sweat.
  • Smart assistant integration (AlexaBuilt-in Wi-Fi means you can stream music directly from Spotify, control it with Google Assistant or Alexa, and use Apple AirPlay 2 from your iPhone.

  • Soundstage widthIt's a clever approach that can create an even wider soundstage in larger rooms.
  • Subwoofer performance (if included)The LG's 8-inch wireless subwoofer can pressurize a room—when that T-Rex footstep hits in Jurassic Park, you feel it in your chest. The 50-watt amplifier and larger driver mean it can reproduce frequencies down to 40Hz, which covers most of the bass content in movies and music.
  • Value for moneyThe LG S80TR at $547 costs more than three times as much, but the feature set justifies the price for the right user. The LG represents genuine value in the premium soundbar category

Just Okay

  • Setup simplicityThe LG S80TR requires significantly more effort but rewards you with better results.

What We Loved

  • AI Room CalibrationThe soundbar walks you through calibration with LG’s AI Room Calibration, which uses built-in microphones to measure your room and fine-tune levels.AI Room Calibration helps here, especially if you move the sub from a corner to a more central spot.
  • Design & build qualityPhysically, the S80TR is classic LG minimalism. The main bar stretches across the width of a 55-inch TV without overhang, dressed in a matte black finish that avoids fingerprints. The wireless subwoofer is tall and slim, easy enough to hide in a corner but still substantial enough that you know it’s there to do damage. The rear speakers are compact and discreet—perfect for sitting on bookshelves or side tables.Sleek enough to disappear under the TV
  • Dialogue clarity (for TV/soundbar use)Dialogue from the up-firing centre channel came through crystal clear, even when buried under layers of gunfire and alien shrieks. The AI Sound Pro processing adds noticeable warmth to dialogue, giving voices natural presence even in the most crowded sound mixes.Clear voices
  • Distortion at high volumeSoundtrack soared cleanly above it all
  • Gaming HDMI passthroughThe HDMI passthrough fully supports 4K/120Hz with VRR and ALLM, meaning you can plug in a PS5 or Xbox Series X without worrying about losing the performance benefits of your OLED.
  • Latency with TV (lip sync)Combat felt more immediate thanks to the low input lag—the audio kept perfect pace with the visuals, so swings, blocks, and grunts felt instinctively synced.
  • Loudness / maximum volumeAs a whole package, the S80TR doesn’t quite deliver that room shaking, cinema experience. Even when I pumped up the volume and increased the Sub-woofer volume, the sound never quite gave me the feels like the Samsung QN990F for instance. Not as punchy or cinematic
  • Multi-speaker pairing reliabilityWOW Orchestra, which lets the soundbar work in tandem with your C5 OLED’s built-in speakers, and it sounds like a one-stop solution.Features like WOW Orchestra expand the soundstage by combining the bar and the OLED’s built-in speakers.
  • Setup simplicitySetup is refreshingly simple. Everything connects wirelessly once powered on, no extra transmitter boxes needed.Easy setup, AI calibration
  • Spotify Connect reliabilitySpotify streams sound warm and balanced, with the sub adding thump without muddying vocals but overall, it’s not as electrifying as I’d like.
  • Subwoofer performance (if included)The S80TR’s subwoofer hit with real authority during explosions, shaking the floor just enough to make you sit forward. The subwoofer didn’t just handle explosions—it carried the low thrum of tension in empty hallways. The wireless subwoofer that feels more like a small furniture piece than an accessory
  • Surround sound simulationStill, once in place, they genuinely add a sense of depth and dimension that the bar alone simply can’t replicate. The rears come alive here—small background details like distant chatter or starship hums subtly anchor you in the world.I loved the fight scene in Predator: Killer of Killers where the ninja arts would fly past you and behind you. Awesome stuff.Rear speakers highlighted footsteps and off-screen threats, making encounters feel more intense and claustrophobic.Great soundstage, detail and clarity
  • Voice clarityDialogue from the up-firing centre channel came through crystal clear, even when buried under layers of gunfire and alien shrieks. The AI Sound Pro processing adds noticeable warmth to dialogue, giving voices natural presence even in the most crowded sound mixes.Delivers where it matters most: dialogue clarity
  • Wi-Fi streaming reliabilitySpotify streams sound warm and balanced, with the sub adding thump without muddying vocals but overall, it’s not as electrifying as I’d like.

Needs Improvement

  • Dolby Atmos height effectsAtmos is the big selling point here, and while the S80TR technically checks the box, overhead effects are where it falls short. That moment when Predator leaps from the trees? You don’t feel him moving above you so much as around you.The S80TR fails to deliver the ships passing over and below, just in front and behind you.The height channels provide a touch of lift, making the soundstage taller than a flat 5.1 system, but it doesn’t fool you into thinking a helicopter is flying over your head.Lackluster overhead soundIf you’re after true overhead immersion, you might feel let down.
  • Rear speaker cable lengthThere is one frustrating caveat: the rear speakers ship with power cables that are far too short. Unless your room has power outlets exactly where you want your rears, you’ll be reaching for extension cords.Rear speakers have really short power cords
